What is the Difference Between Coronavirus & COVID-19?
These are unique times, and you undoubtedly have plenty of questions regarding COVID-19. For example, what are the latest symptoms? Is the curve finally flattening? And of course, how much longer will this last? The COVID-19 crisis is a rapidly evolving situation with many unknowns, but here’s one question we can answer with certainty: What is the difference between coronavirus and COVID-19?
In short, COVID-19 (SARS-CoV2) is the disease that is caused by the novel (new) coronavirus strain. A coronavirus is a type of virus. There are seven known strains, or forms, of coronavirus, and some of them may even sound familiar to you. In 2003, the coronavirus strain SARS-CoV—or severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)—infected thousands of people across the globe. Then in 2012, MERS-CoV caused hundreds of deaths from Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS).
