Receive a TB Skin Test in the Silver Spring, MD, Area
Fast Track Urgent Care is far from the average “doc-in-a-box” in Silver Spring, Maryland. We are a fully equipped, physician-led immediate care center that provides a wide range of key clinical lab services on a walk-in basis. One such service is a TB skin test, also referred to as the Mantoux tuberculin test or a tuberculin skin test.
What is a TB skin test?
A TB skin test is performed to determine if a patient is infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, or tuberculosis. Called TB for short, tuberculosis is a type of bacteria that can attack the lungs and other vital organs, including the brain and kidneys. Tuberculosis doesn’t always cause noticeable symptoms, so TB skin tests are helpful in identifying an infection.
Here’s how this test works:
- Using a small needle, a clinician injects a harmless substance called tuberculin into the patient’s arm.
- The patient returns two or three days later to be evaluated.
- If there is a hard bump at the injection site, the patient likely has a tuberculosis infection. If there is no bump, an infection is unlikely.
Follow-up tests may be recommended based on the results of the TB skin test and the patient’s individual risk factors.
